A few characteristics of sex linked inheritance in birds are:

  • Female birds get their Z chromosome only from their father.
  • Female birds always express these sexlinked genes because they are not suppressed by genes on the W chromosome.
    Note that epistatic effects still can hide this expression.
  • Female birds are hemizygous for the sexlinked genes.
  • Male birds can show a dosage effect for dominant sex linked genes.
