Manipulate whole cube with white centerpiece facing up.
any edge pieces present with white side up? U turn until most correct edges line up with side centerpieces.
Manipulate next target edge to the front.

1: repeat until white cross is done
bring an unsolved corner target to the front/right/top. The to be moved corner can be there (twisted) or brought to the front/right/bottom.
repeat R'D'R D untill the corner is on target and not twisted
2: repeat for other corners
manipulate the fixed first layer to the bottom to fix the middle layer
collect the corners around the center, with the sides matching (Front to Left: Blue Orange Green Red). should be doable.
tip: switching the front/right/upper corner with the one below without disturbing the other 3 bottom corners: R U R U' R
note that for R, L, F and B turning 180o is implied. Notation is ~2 in toolbar
you can swap two corner pieces on the back of the top layer with this algorithm: (R F U F) U' (R U F U' R)
2 other corners to be swapped? Swap corners until you have the desired last trade positions.
Swap the left-bottom and the top-right edges using this algorithm: (R D2 F) D2 (F D2 F R)

Move the to be fitted edge piece to the front in the upper face,
When there is no edge available in the upper layer, move the edge in the middle layer to the front, and do the below algorithm* twice with (a) U turn(s) in between to position the edge to your front.
To move it into (*or from) the front/left side: U' L' U L U F U' F'
To move it into (*or from) the front/right side: U R U' R' U' F' U F
3: repeat for other edges
Note: use the arrow keys to manipulate the fixed levels to the bottom side.
4: use this algorithm multiple times to get from a Dot, to an ⅃ shape, to a horizontal Stripe and finally to a Cross of the now upfacing "bottom" color: F R U R' U' F'
5: To exchange the left and front upper edges: R U R' U R U2 R' U
In some cases two opposite pieces have to be swapped which takes two steps. Perform the algorithm once (correct pieces to the right and left), then rotate the cube to re-align for the second round.
6: hold a correctly positioned (not necessarily oriented) corner to the front/right and cycle the other three by these moves U R U' L' U R' U' L Help, I have 2 correctly positioned corners
If you have 2 correctly positioned corners, then choose an incorrect corner to the front/right (and the correct ones to the back) until you get 3 incorrect (or 4 correct) corners after the move above.
Twist front/right/upper corner algorithm: R' D' R D (see also pocket cube)
7: Note: during this method the cube looks a mess. Repeat the algorithm untill the corner is correctly oriented and then move another corner to the front/right/upper and repeat.
edges, and 3 out of 4 corners, should be doable.
edges: move the unsolved corner by U turns above middle edge to preserve rest of first layer (keyhole principle). "Bend" down the unsolved corner/edge and "reel" in (sometimes out) the middle edges by D turns.
bring last corner position to the front/right, and if it is not at the correct position already twisted, bring the to be fitted piece to the bottom right.
R'D'R D algorithm. Note: same as in last step.
If the twist at the correct position is off, while the middle edge is ok, do the following:
R' bring the corner down,
D bring the corner to the back for extra twist. Middle edge is at the bottom/back now.
R restores the rest of the first and middle levels. and moves/twists the corner.
D2 bring the middle edge to the front, to move it back in. the corner is now at the left/back.
R'D R moves the last middle edge back in. This is a bend/reel example.
D brings the corner back to the front/right,
repeat
Now turn the fixed layers to the bottom.

Most algorithms have opposite moves in them. Then you can learn the sound of the algorithm eg. RuRuRuuRu as a mnemonic to deduce them.
Muscle memory is also very practical.

This is how I tried to solve the cube in the very beginning, but never perfected the last moves. video by @SlowerCuber
This method is less suitable for other cube types.
Note the Carrousel method, by which all edges are moved one spot until the last one falls into place, see video.
Turn the mostly fixed layers to the bottom.
Corner twisting: R' D' R D. Keep the lower layers of the cube steady.
Note that 6 cycles restore everything, but you can move an unsolved corner to the front/up/right when another one is completed during these cycles.
Move the corner piece at the keyhole position (front/bottom/right) to its spot by placing the target above it, and applying algorithm/cycle.
When 2 corners are left, but twisted, move these to the top layer (front) and do the algorithm cycle with a clever in between U move.
