Why Study Genetics?
Genetics is the cookbook of life. If you've spent time around chickens, you've probably noticed the wide variation between breeds, varieties and individuals, from the egg through the adult bird. If you've bred chickens, you've probly experienced the joys and frustrations that arise from this wide variability.
There are exceptional breeders who have perfected the "art" of poultry breeding through years of experience developing their eye and viewing the resulting progeny. They are in essence conducting a number of experiments, and in hte end achieve some excellent results in manipulating genetics. However, a basic understanding of the genes that are present in the breeding stock and how those genes express and interact can allow the breeder to focus on the more critical aspects, increasing the probability of positive outcomes.
